Richard,
It is clear that the introduction of this publication falls into the
area of "do not let the truth get in the way of a good story". The
information given in the introduction should have been clear and
correct. There is no doubt as to the numbers of SPECIES in Australia,
but the text in the introduction is written in GOV SPEAK where they
mixed up the terms species and varieties (what ever that may mean). The
statement that '23 species are presumed extinct' should be challenged
and have been presented correctly.
This is not to say that there are a number of species and sub species
which are in serious decline within Australia.

At the risk of wading in to a debate above me, I tend to think that Denise
Goodfellow's reply "not everyone is as knowledgeable as you!" has hit the
nail on the head. I admit that the opening paragraph has some figures pulled
out of someone's rear end (as Keith Egan said I doubt that much thought went
into the phrase "more than 1000 species gracing our sky" etc), but as a
publication for the masses, I thought it wasn't too bad. My 9 year old
daughter enjoyed it, as did my wife who hasn't got a natural history bone in
her body....yet! (I'm working on that). I think we need to recognise where
the publication was intended for - political issues aside. I'm a member of
Friends of Group and any recognition in the printed media is a wonderful
boost to a groups morale.
Cheers
Richard Dilena
