Three Brown Songlarks have been recorded in Bayside (S-E
Melbourne) in the last two days after strongly northerlies on
Wednesday.
A mature male was on the sports field at Holloway Rd.,
Sandringham, from 1115 to 1730 on 30th September and a female
was seen briefly near him. A female was seen today in a
residential area (Canberra Grove, Brighton East), feeding on
nature strips (OK - presumably feeding on creatures found in
nature strips!) and in front gardens.
The male and today's bird were surprisingly confiding. The male
ignored flocks of starlings and other birds flying for shelter
giving alarm calls and the female ignored kids rushing, by foot,
bike and car, to their practice VCE exams. The male was seen
eating an earthworm.
Otherwise few signs of migration/spring movement so far: a few
cuckoos (3 species) and some groups of grey fantails.
