Michael,
I finally got it working, thanks to you and Frank Fuzzoli...
We made up our own break-out cable for COM3 and got the pin numbering
wrong.  Fixed that and got txmit working, but still no input. 
However, using select() per your suggestion seemed to have solved that
problem!!  I can now txmit & receive on tsuart ports..
