I have been using the first few TSUART ports with no problems (once I
figured out how, with the help of TS Tech Support. Thanks, guys!).
I just put the new kernel onto my TS7800, and the TSUART ports seem to
be activated by default. You can check this by looking in /dev for
files (actually devices, of course) with the names ttts0 through ttts9.
ttts2 and 3 are on header COM2, and ttts4 and 5 are on header COM3.
All four are RS-232 compatible. I am using an RS232-to-TTL adapter
from Acroname to interface one of them to a CMUcam2+, which uses only
TTL signal levels.
To break out the signals, I made up some adapter cables. First I made
a cable to connect a pin female header connector to a nine-pin male
DB-9 connector. This is easy to do with ribbon cable -- just match pin
1 to pin 1, and forget about pin 10. Then crimp the connectors on. Or
you can buy these cables ready-made; they are used on some PCs to
connect a serial port on the motherboard to a DB-9 on the back of the
case.
Then I built a Y-cable with DB-9 connectors, one female and two male.
On the female end, pin 5 (ground) connects to pin 5 of the two males.
Again on the female, pins 2 and 3 connect to pins 2 and 3 on one of
the males (these are the signals for the first port). Finally, pins 7
and 8 of the female connect to 2 and 3 on the other male (these carry
the signals of the second port on the header). I forget which order 7
and 8 connect, but a quick glance at the schematic will tell you.
I tested the ports with kermit, and they work great as long as you do
"set flow none" and "set carrier off" so it ignores the non-existent
status signals.
Good luck!
