You put me on the right track of thinking. Turned out it was the some
bad settings in <nfsmount>/etc/network/interfaces (I run my LAN on
192.168.1.x and they had it set for .0.x). So once it tried setting up
networking from the settings on the nfsmount root file system it must
have messed something up. I guess that makes sense - although the NFS
mount had to be established to find the settings in the first place. 

In any event, it boots now and init runs properly. Thank you much for
helping me work through this. Now, I'm off to finish compiling Dan
Smolik's kernel so I can get the IDE working.
