You'll find a variable-precision fixed-point FFT code in C using
32-bit words inside http://sourceforge.net/projects/recwav
It has an option to gain extra precision from a fixed-length word by
shifting the intermediate results up and down at every stage so that
maximum precision is used throughout the calculation.
