wow now we have something! Redboot understands ext2 filesystems.
So something is wrong with this card. You say you used ext2fs to format
hda1, but when you used fdisk did you set the partition type to Linux
(type 83). Strictly speaking the type does not have to actually match the
file system resident on the partition, but it may have to for redboot.
Here is my output
