On that note, Pb batteries would probably work best, relativly low tech, reliable, easy to charge and doesn't mind being on charge most of it's life.

If I go ahead I think I'll put a small LIon battery and trickle
charger on my accessory board, just enough to keep the system alive
through a clean shutdown.
    

I use a set of NiMH batteries, or a 12V Pb battery to power it for several
hours away from it's regular PSU.
