The "better" mic will have better off axis rejection but the flip side is t=
hat this also means that the mic requires more precise aiming. The further =
away the sound source the more difficult this will be to accomplish success=
fully. =0D

Shotgun mics are designed as an alternative to a lav mic and where distance=
s from mic to the talent are going usually going to be within 3 feet and wh=
ere the boom person has the skill to keep it pointed properly. For indoor u=
se something like a Sennheisser 8060 may be better and more forgiving of th=
e aiming of the mic and this would likely apply to outdoor recordings as we=
ll of distant subjects. =0D

There is going to be a sweet spot in terms of maximum off axis sound reject=
ion and the forward angle of sound reception. I have seen mic patterns that=
 are also asymmetrical and have a left side bias so pointing the mic to the=
 right of a subject will provide a stronger signal from the mic.
