Jerry,
A far as carrying it in the field, I have a short 1/4 inch wide strap that =
I loop around my Telinga handle, with the other end tied to a ring on my ve=
st, and just let it hang there so that my hands are free for binoc's or cam=
era. I can still hold it so that it doesn't bounce around, but I can let go=
if I want my hands free.
You never know nowadays what they will allow as a carry-on, and when they w=
ill charge you for an extra carry-on that doesn't quite comply with their m=
easurements. While the parabola is strong, it isn't indestructible. Putting=
it into a checked bag may work, but I don't have full confidence in the ba=
ggage handlers to treat it as you might want or wish them to. On my last bi=
rding trip to Costa Rica, I carried it separately, but strict enforcement o=
f size and number of carry-ons (at least the threat) had me deciding to lea=
ve the parabola at home (in favour of a smaller mic), on a more recent fami=
ly holiday to Puerto Rico. As it turned out, I didn't see any concern over =
what I was carrying on, but I wouldn't want to take a chance of being asked=
to decide which to check into the care of the baggage handlers: my carry-o=
n bag, my computer or my parabola. I'd like to know how others get around t=
his issue.
All the best,
Ernie Jardine

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Carrying and Transporting a Parabola
I just purchased a 21-inch parabolic mic system from http://www.wildtronics=
.com
So far, I like it very well. I have had no prior experience with the type =
of parabola that can be somewhat rolled up for transporting by plane. I kn=
ow I want to carry the microphone on board with me, but I=E2=80=99m thinkin=
g I could put the parabola itself in a checked bag.
I=E2=80=99d like any advice on what sort of container to best carry it in w=
hen traveling by plane, and I=E2=80=99m also interested to know how folks c=
arry them when walking in the woods. I=E2=80=99d like to be able to have i=
t assembled and ready to use quickly, without having to carry it in my hand=
while walking to a recording destination.
I=E2=80=99m thinking of some sort of large-mouth bag that would attach to m=
y back.
Any thoughts?
