Hi, 

 As the (albeit somewhat technically challenged) OP, I have done my best to 
follow along with the more esoteric posts but my practical conclusions for 
using the D100 in the field are:
 

 1) Use the S/N 100db feature for quiet ambient recordings.
 

 2) For recordings such as thunderstorms then switch to the Noise limiter 
option instead.
 

 I hope I have not misinterpreted your interesting discussions!
