Hi Klaus,

I suppose "fetch" might mean something different to a species recordist tha=
n to a soundscape recordist.  A gun mic might be great for fetching the sou=
nd of a single bird, while a SASS might be great for fetching the sounds of=
 a grove of trees. Whether amplification is done by attenuating everything =
else or by adding gain the result is the same - it sounds closer. I still t=
hink microphone self-noise is a factor because it effects the resolution of=
 sound and I think we expect closer sounds to have better resolution.
