I'm going to back up a bit here. You presented your idea of Fetch along with 
your ranking method of comparing various microphones relative to a cardioid 
mic. It seems like you are trying to show that a shotgun mic will resolve a 
subject at a distance better than mics of other directional characteristics. My 
problem with your proposed ranking system is that it falls apart unless all of 
the mics being ranked have similar self-noise characteristics. It might work 
with your personal set of microphones but that is only by chance. It will 
probably not work with another persons set of mics. Really you are just ranking 
the polar pattern, not the fetch or ability to resolve subjects at a distance.
