Hi Eric and all, Umbrella will have its own problems. The fabric of the umbrella will make additional swishing noise in heavy winds, which can be picked up by sensitive microphones and rain drops on the umbrella will produce additional sounds. Actually another solution for the insects is the fake fur itself. It is the fur which attracts insects so if you put another fake fur on some contraption at a higher level than the recorder the insects will fly to that rather than hitting microphone fur. In summer, I use my microphone fur as a bait for, noseeums, horseflies and deer flies by keeping it raised above my head so they don't bother me. Or sometimes with my butterfly net I swipe at them time and again, that keeps them away from me at least a few minutes.
