< Theoretically you should be able to narrow the stereo object width by
doing an R-L and L-R transform. >
Easier to narrow the field with the pan pots in the DAW, although I've never
found the stereo field to be over wide with XY. If anything the opposite.
< I know transformers are unfashionable but they often work well. >
It's a topic of polarized opinions. One side believes transformers equal
distortion, the other believes active balanced inputs equals more RFI. The
truth is that a transformer can be built with distortion characteristics (both
harmonic & phase components) which are inaudible, & transformerless inputs can
be built which are immune to all but the most extreme RF situations. An
advantage to transformers is free gain. An advantage to transformerless inputs
is lower cost & lighter weight.
< BTW the idea of a rear capsule windshield is not the solution as cardioid
mics have an pressure gradient sensitivity. That's why cardioids are also bad
for handling noise, and why vocal mics are
usually omni. >
This is true for lavaliers, but not for hand held vocal mics, which are
generally intended for use with PA systems, & where omni patterns are, for all
intents & purposes, unusable. Of handheld vocal mics, about 80 to 90% are
cardioid, & the rest are hyperccardioid.
