It's another way of saying the mic is directional. A microphone that works =
based on a pressure-gradient has both sides of the diaphragm open to the ai=
r, so that sound waves are measured as a difference between the pressure on=
 each side of the diaphragm. The axis formed by the diaphragm is a region o=
f null pressure difference; the resulting polar pattern is a figure eight.

The second mic principle is pressure-operated. Such mics have only one face=
 of the diaphragm open to pressure changes, which is registers no matter wh=
ere this originates. These mics are omnidirectional.

Other polar patterns are made up of combinations of these two basic princip=
les. For example, adding the two results in cardioid (since one lobe of the=
 figure eight has positive phase and the other negative).
