Ryan,
My first thought is if you've got a kit is to just use it. You will
soon want more stuff anyway, but the important thing is to find good
locations and interesting sounds with whatever rig.
If you record in .WAV (recommended) you will soon want extra disc
storage. I'm using 2T USB discs as I record long and choose later. I
also back up externally as there is no fallback with digital. I edit
on .FLAC using Audacity.
We've been discussing minidisc recently and soon concluded that theur
day had passed. The first ones only outputted as analogue which raterh
destroyed the benefits of digital recording.
I've got a Tascam DR-1 which has XLR inputs but rather hissy mic
inputs for quiet backgrounds, but I use an old mixer to go into line
inputs. The quality using line input (or mic input at low gain) is
high with any half decent posket recorder. Don't blow more than half
your budget on a recorder. Try to base your system on XLR pluggery.
> I also need to get some sort of wind sock
As soon as you step out of the front door you will need a _good_
windshield - and mount. Go for a basket type with a "yeti" cover. (I
tend not to use the "dead cat" description as I used to breed pedigree
cats and they don't make good windgags. :-) )
The bigger the diameter the better and be prepared to spend on this
essential item. Look for one which will take other mics as you
upgrade. I got a few from India which were about half the price, but I
think I bought the last ones. Don't use slip-on windshields. Use a
bass roll-off as standard as you can reverse this later without losing
quality.
Look out for bargains on eBay - that'a where I got my pro quality kit.
(Apart from the Tascam) I want a DR-680. :-(
