Scott,
I'm afraid I'm stuck in a luddite timewarp when one listened to
musical instruments played in an auditorium. :-) I remember fondly the
Albert Hall echo which the BBC killed off many years ago.
In the choice of excellent recording mixes versus music, I tried to
produce TV balances, but in the Film Unit I never had more than 15
tracks to record on. I recorded a Havana Jazz Festival which was raw,
bold and brassy, (trombones played like percussion) but the
co-producers, Island Records, insisted on a smoothed out recording
type mix. In the final dubbing, they even mixed in canned applause on
a compulsory pro-regime item. :-(
I'm now doing "mixing by selection" with the wildlife. While I am
guilty of doing a bit of gentle cleaning up on my nature stuff, I aim
to reproduce what is out there warts and all. I'm thinking of going to
four tracks, but multitracking a wood would be an interesting idea,
but like music mixes would probably kill the ambience.
