Scott, I've tried that and it's not as adjustable as doing it afterwards. I prefer an after-mix with or without equalisation as this can cover up the transition level between the reduced noise and the foreground signal. I've also tried playing with the width of the stereo background before the mix. I also use the spectrogram on Audacity to see what's there.
