On a Mac I like to use Peak LE which is a 2 channel (stereo) sound
editing program, you can also use Audacity (free). Sound Studio is
good for very high frequencies e.g. if you want to edit bat
recordings. A useful EQ plugin that I use with Peak is Apulsoft
apEQ. Izotope RX is an excellent broadband noise reduction program
but it takes a bit of learning.
I'd be starting with a simple audio editor and just learn basic
editing, chopping track to desired length and adding fade in at
beginning and fade out at end of track. That part is very simple.
Make sure you keep your original recording, then play around with
editing a copy to your heart's content.
