Hi Mitch, A less academic introduction that is well worth looking at is Mark Constantine's "The Sound Approach to birding". The book gives and overview of much the same territory as Catchpole and Slater but doesn't go into the same amount of detail. Where Sound Approach wins out as an introduction is that it is copiously illustrated with sonograms which are used to highlight the discussion in the text. There are two cd's which come with the book that include all the recordings used to create the sonograms. The authors recommend listening to the cd as you read through the book. http://www.soundapproach.co.uk I'd suggest reading Sound Approach to get your bearings and then move on to Catchpole and Slater to fill out the fine details. cheers Paul |
