<<Are there any quality issues you can think of with the D50 and your
water recordings? Is it clear, consistent, realistic? (I'm not really
up to speed on the sound quality characteristics to consider.)>>

I do find the D50 to be a good sounding recorder, but there's no doubt
that my recordings using Neumann mics plugged into a Millennia preamp
into a Mytek converter have considerably more realism & what I would
term depth of field or three dimensionality. Anymore I'm generally
making my nature recordings as quick side trips from my primary work
on tour in concert halls around the globe, such as recording waves
lapping the dock at the Circular Quay while walking from my hotel to
the Sydney Opera House, or a thunderstorm outside the stage door in
Galway, etc. Thus portability & ease are my primary considerations. I
would always opt for the Sound Devices machine with external mics if
nature recording were the prime intent of any trip (and money were no
object!) That said, I've been quite pleased with the Sony results,
given the obvious compromises.
