The USBPre should do fine to convert line level (consumer or pro)
analog sources to the computer. I have one and have used it for many
such projects. The mike preamps are pretty good too!
This model has been out for many years, and has not seen much updating
from Sound Devices. By now there are dozens of interfaces from other
manufacturers that will do what you're describing. Some of them, like
the Zoom H4n, can serve as either a freestanding recorder or as a pass-
through interface to the computer. The USBPre cannot do that.
