Hello, Bruce. I would say that the Zoom H2 would fit your needs better than the H4N - unless you value complexity. I don't see how spending $350 more than the H2 would buy a worthwhile increase in sound quality when you consider the quality of microphones available for that price. The extreme convenience of the pocketable, AA-powered H2 should not be overlooked, and most other alternatives are vastly less convenient, one way or another, and there may not even be a payoff in terms of better sound, especially for under $600.
