Well, it all started with the phone company. In the old days, which ran int=
o
the 1970s in some places, they had rooms full of operators. They all had
patch bays to make connections, and those were done with roughly 1/4" plugs=
.
They were a bit smaller, but not as small as those audio "not-quite-mini"
plugs you see on patch bays (possibly the bantam ones mentioned above). My
dad worked for the phone co. and when they retooled everything, he brought
home lots of cables, bays, connectors, etc. I was in my teens and just
getting into audio and thought I was set up pretty well, until I found out
that my equipment didn't work with anyone else's.

On other terminology, in my part of the world, Plug usually means the male
connector and Jack is the female. The actual term Phone isn't used much, an=
d
neither is Phono (referring to RCA plugs/jacks). Mostly, we call them 1/4"
and RCA.
