the one thing that would be a show-stopper for me is the form factor  
of the PMD661 e.g. the XLR jacks being on the 'bottom' of the unit
if used in a bag this will cause some problems with the mic XLR's and  
cable resting on the bottom of the bag unless the design of your bag  
accommodates this
and of course placing the unit on its side defeats the ease of access  
to the record levels and hp level controls as well as the meters
the nice thing about the FR2LE is the form factor: the inputs are on  
the side which makes it 'bag friendly'
albeit at the cost of having to use bulkier CompactFlash cards  
instead of the smaller SDHC cards
