Ok. So I just went into the backyard with an Olympus DS-30 and a Dollar
Store Parbolic Mic, the kind made from an umbrella hat. I pointed the
mic at wren on my roof about forty feet away. Not the most exciting
subject but it is midday and not much going on in birdland. I live in an
urban area so HVAC units, buses, and airplanes are the constant
background. Sorry about that part. Anyway, If you go with the umbrella
hat mic and the DS-30 this is what you can expect. Not bad considering
the awful urban ambience (awful for nature recordists) here in Durham.
The file is converted from WMA to WAV in Adobe Auditon. No processing
except to fade in and out. The DS-30 USB transfer interface is painless.
Just click and drag.

Hope this helps
Jim
