Derrick,
Let me sound a note of caution about your selection of recorder. The
Sony ICDB300 is definitely designed as a pocket dictation recorder.
The recorder's frequency response range is limited, because the human
voice has a limited range. Saki monkeys are a small species, so
you'll want a recorder that can more accurately capture sounds higher
than the normal human vocal range.
Another issue with a voice recorder is that the manufacturers (mostly
Sony, Olympus and Sanyo) use proprietary compressed file formats for
recording. The files are not in a form that will permit you to edit
them using typical PC software. This will end up being a major pain
in the neck when it's time to analyze your recordings and present
results to colleagues.
Considering all the time, energy and money needed to get to your
recording site in South America, don't try to save a few dollars on
the recorder. Get a model that is designed to record music and nature
sounds, and that records in uncompressed WAV format. Beg or borrow
the funds necessary to purchase a good recorder. You can sell the
recorder when you return if you have to.
