I have to agree 110% with Rob's comments. I'd also observe that while the external preamp's certainly improve performance they also bring a significant usability hit in the field. A compact recorder + preamp is far more unwieldy than an recorder of similar bulk, plus you end having to deal with additional batteries and cables (which are an extra cost not shown in the price comparisons).
