This is very true. Working with fixed mics takes a lot of the fun out
of recording for me. The stereo arrays in the point and shoot
recorders are not "X-Y" because they not coincident, they're not
"ORTF" or "Spaced A/B" because the distance between the capsules is
too close. The arrays seem best suited for close-micing effects and
acoustic instruments. After trying to make engaging stereo
recordings with the coincident X-Y array employed in Rode NT-4 mics,
the students, themselves, insisted on making rigs with more effective
stereo imaging.
The "best," comparably-priced start-up systems are rarely hot, new items.
For me, "critical recording" includes the joy of thinking through all
of the options. Tools that make a number of key decisions for me have
less to offer. Rob D.
