I don't want to start a flame here Martyn, but not more than a few
weeks ago I posted a recorded comparison of the new Sennheiser MKH
mics from my Prettyboy Project (http://gregweddig.net/blog). I would
like to think this is a real world field test. Danny Meltzer, Tony
Cellis and I (together the Maryland Nature Recordists) were testing
the same mics in the field last weekend, I was getting ready to post
the sound files soon of our mini expedition to Blackwater Wildlife
Refuge in Maryland (the recording was excellent!)

Arcane discussions about preamp noise ratings and microphone
sensitivity questions are part of nature recording but do they need to
be part of this group? or are they more appropriate to the mic
builders etc. I don't mind them, I skip them if I'm not interested,
though some of them are interesting to me. Sperating the wheat from
the chaff has always been a problem on news groups, listservs and
others. While the moderated groups tend to be better, you cannot
please everyone (as you point out).

I think although I have a technical mind and, like Dan, have been a
technical resource for many group members, at NSS workshops and the
like; I read the technical posts, but I'm much more excited by trip
reports, field craft ideas, and posted samples. I find it much more
interesting than audio technical info (which I do for a living).

Those with tech talk fatigue should learn to use their inbox filters,
it's easy to do, a few keywords would file most of the tech talk to
the trash or to a separate folder for later reading. Easy to do.

I highly support your effort in maintaining a "clean" tech free group.
For me I barely have time to read the two nature recording groups
that I belong to now, not to mention RAMPS, and the industry listservs
I follow for my job. I'll have to see if I can fit another group will
fit in my schedule.
