Small comment on the VP88 - I have one which I use happily for many
things, from ambience to overhead drums to voiceover recording:
The majority of the noise is in the side capsule; the mid cardioid is
much quieter, though for stereo material it is too noisy for nature
recording. In applications where wide stereo is not needed, lowering
the side level quiets it down a lot.
I asked some Shure reps at an AES show and they said they just
couldn't get a quiet capsule, implying it was someone else's fault!
Personally I think it is in the electronics they designed, not the
capsule itself. But what do I know...
