Hi Jeremy, Clint
I'd highly recommend taking a look at the AT-3032. They seem to give
remarkably good results for the price. I'd be surprised if the NT55's
came close to the AT3032's in regards to noise floor.
I've been using a "Curt Clone" rig, with some variations due to
different local standard timber sizing. The pine boards I've used are
about 10mm narrower and 5mm thinner which will reduce the boundary/
barrier effect somewhat compared to Curt's original design. Even so,
the rig seems to give quite nice results. I've also made up cages out
of "mouse mesh" with fake fur windshields that have really helped in
breezy conditions.

I was out looking at a possible recording location yesterday and was
able to make a longish recording of the midday ambience. This was
recorded with my new Oade "Super Mod" Tascam HD-P2 and the AT-3032's
in the Lerderderg Gorge about 80km west of Melbourne. It's not
nearly as "busy" as the Mt. Samaria Dawn Chorus, and has a "babbling
brook" in the foreground which makes assessing the low level noise of
the AT-3032's a bit difficult. The original recording at 24bit/
Message: 44.
Subject: 1khz and I've dithered the file down to 16bit then converted to a
320kbs mp3 format using the lame encoder.
Midday at O'Briens Crossing, Lerderderg Gorge, Lerderderg State Park,
Victoria (11Mb approx.)

The dawn chorus recording is a much lower quality mp3 but can be
found here:
Mt. Samaria Dawn Chorus, Mt. Samaria State Park, Victoria (10Mb
approx.)

Note: I'll be moving the recordings to new website in the next week
or so.
cheers
