No mac that I know of used a 1/4" jack, all 1/8"
My MacBook pro analog input is just fine if used with quality sound
editing software. I don't trust the stuff that comes with the MacBook
for this. We've done quite a bit of converting to digital with the
MacBook Pro. If you are having sound quality problems you might should
suspect the software you are using as well. Or whatever you are using to
send the sound to the MacBook.
