The Energi-To-Go from Energizer ($20) is a portable recharging system
that uses two AA batteries. One version of the Energi-To-Go has a
cable ending in a Mini-B USB plug, so it will work with many low-power
field recorders. Examples include the Sony MZ-RH1, M-Audio Microtrack
2496, Edirol R-09, and Zoom H4.
Leonard Lombardo of Sonic Studios disassembled an Energi-To-Go unit
and found that it contains pretty sophisticated electronics to control
the charger functions. In contrast, many AA battery boxes in this
price range have poor control over the battery voltage (or none at all).
Leonard's tests indicate that the Energi-To-Go with alkaline batteries
should run the Microtrack 2496 an extra 3.5 hours, and 5 hours extra
with lithium AA cells. Because the MZ-RH1 uses significantly less
power than the Microtrack, I expect those run times to triple when
used with the minidisc machine.
Leonard discovered that the Energi-To-Go may not work with
rechargeable AA NiMH batteries, due to the lower initial voltage these
batteries provide. More testing is needed here.
Leonard's report suggests that the Energi-To-Go circuit board can be
removed and used as the heart of a home-brew external powering system.
A battery box that uses rechargeable C or D cells, or perhaps 4 AA
cells, should work well with the battery controller.
