Jake,
I also have one of these tape recorders. Yes, you would use the line out
ports and these would go to a sound card on your G4 or PC to digitize the
audio. I think this is what you mean by "adaptor", but it is really not a
simple cable thing. You need a piece of electronics that takes audio in and
produces a digital output stream that can be stored on the hard drive in a
file.
Adobe Audition 1.5 (and later) has a wonderful built-in pop remover that I
have used to save me hours of time in manually removing obvious defects. I
used it on a really old cassette tape with voice that had hundreds of
defects. I was very satisfied with the results. In any case, you can also
address pops manually with Adobe Audition should you decide to forego the
built-in tool.

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Analog to Digital
Hello Everyone,
Recently I acquired a 1/4 inch magnetic tape on an
akai reel to reel player, made in 1968.
The tape has some beautiful nature sounds that I want
to import into my G4 or HP PC.
Should I use the line out ports on the reel to reel
with RCA cables, and then get the adaptors for USB
into the computer?
Also, which software do you reccommend for light
cleaning up of the sound such as removing pops?
Thank you,
Jake
