Or at least until this Fall.  That's when the new
Sonosax SX-R4 field recorder may be released.
(OK, more likely sometime in 2008.)

This new machine will be slightly smaller and lighter
than the 744t, support up to 4 XLR mic inputs (each
with its own preamp), and cost a little less than
the 744t ($4500, although with the sinking value of
the dollar vs the Swiss Franc this could easily increase).

Another intriguing product that should be in the
same class as the 722 is HHB's replacement for the
Portadisc.  The HHB reps at the recent NAB show
indicated that they are "close" to an announcement.

Vaporware?  Sure, but the rate of introduction of new
field recording equipment is accelerating.  The 7xx
series of products is wonderful, and this is forcing
other manufacturers to step up their game.
