They are single pattern mics derived from the design of the MKH-80 &
MKH-800. I know my MKH-80's are better than my MKH-40 when set to
cardioid, so I'd expect to see improvement over the MKH-40 & MKH-50.
Primarily this should be increased sensitivity and lower self noise. The
MKH-20 replacement will probably be mostly increased sensitivity with a
small improvement in self noise.
The small size of the omni does interest me. I'd love to try a pair in a
modified SASS. Lang Elliott's MKH-20 design in the Telinga dish would
also benefit from smaller size. But I really don't have the money to
spring for a new pair.
