Unlike the 744t, the Edirol R-4 field recorder actually has a preamp for each of four input channels. So the R-4 can record 4 channels without the assistance of a mixer. Unfortunately, preamps in the R-4 (and R-4 Pro) are a lot noisier than the 744t. The estimable equipment modifier, Doug Oade, is planning a significant upgrade to the preamps of the Edirol R-4. Doug's "Ambient Mod" is designed specifically for recording nature sounds. An R-4 with this upgrade (I'm guessing $2000 for R-4 plus upgrade) should be a very interesting alternative to the 744t and 422 ($6500) for four channel recording. --oryoki |
