with firmware 2.0+ (which you can install on any existing 702) you can
attach an external firewire drive (hard, DVD-RAM, whatever....) -
bulkier, definitely, but maybe no heavier than having a hard drive
internally: and almost certainly cheaper :-)
also, compact flash has a wider temperature range capability than a hard
drive, as well as being lighter, quieter and perhaps more shock resistant.
i have a 702 and have only used it to record to Compact Flash, using an
8Gb card, though obviously i could get longer recording times with a
hard drive. i carry with me a little (80Gb) flash drive reader, so i can
transfer from my card to that and start over again.
i'm very happy with my 702, though i can't say that i have used any of
its competitors and so am not making a comparison
