Hi Debbi,

I started out (and still do, on casual walks) using the Olympus DS-2
Digital Voice Recorder, which I found very useful just for the uses
you intend.  It looks like a very slim cellphone and is good for
outings where you don't want to be weighed down by too much equipment.

It's very easy to use and the 64mb memory has been more than
sufficient for casual-walking use.  It saves in wma format, but you
can get freeware coverters to convert to other formats; I usually save
them as wav files.
