Or, there is my favorite ambiance mic, which is pseudo binaural, head
spaced and a boundary mic. It works for speakers too, not just headphones:

Originally thought up by Lang, my mod SASS/MKH-20 cost me about $1300,
but it could be made with cheaper mics at a possible hit in quality. Or
even use the original version SASS, which will probably beat the lapel
mics. No tree required, though a 17' tripod does make nice recordings.
