The cheapest price I could find today is $1400 from samash.com That's
a great price for a four channel 24/96 recorder. The R-4 has a 40GB
hard disc, so you don't need to purchase Compactflash cards. The R-4
does have a Compactflash slot, but it's only for file transfers, not
for recording.
The R-4's four input jacks can accept either XLR or 1/4" phone plugs.
Each channel has its own preamp gain setting. You can set the R-4 to
record two stereo pairs with different preamp gain from one pair of mics.
The R-4 is pretty simple to operate, especially when compared to the
Sound Devices 722.
I couldn't find any negative comments about the R-4 from Doug Oade on
the Oade.com forums. Whatever his earlier opinion might have been, I
did find the following from Doug, dated 12/15/05:
"...I want one for myself to do surround nature recordings..."
