In DV cameras, the DVX 100A has a decent reputation for sound as does
the Canon L2. The Sony products in the same class are not as good (and
the new HDV cameras seem to be no better). Less expensive cameras than
these are uniformly mediocre-to-poor with inferior preamp and
undefeatable automatic gain control circuits.

When recording audio with a prosumer video camera, you are better off
recording audio on manual using the line input and controlling the sound
with a good quality preamp like the Soundcraft or Beachtec products.
These portable preamps also offer phantom power, a real advantage.
