Gianni,
Thanks very much for sharing these test results.
Since manufacturers don't appear to use the same
tests to arrive at a signal to noise figure, we
can't use their published S/N as a means of comparison.
Your relative rankings of mic S/N are the next best
thing.
Your original message didn't mention if the mics were
powered by a separate battery box, or from the recorders
directly. This could make a difference, as Rob D.'s
tests with Sony Hi-MD and Rolls battery box have shown.
I would be very interested to find out if you
were able to hear any difference in recordings
made in the following two ways, assuming you use the
same mics in both cases.
1. CoreSound Mic2496 --SPDIF--> MAUDIO MT2496 --> 2GB CF
2. CoreSound Mic2496 --TosLink--> CoreSound PDAudio CF -->
iPaq 3870 --> 2GB CF
The digital output of the Mic2496 *should* be passed through
and recorded in an identical manner by both recorders.
If this is true, the $350 M-Audio MicroTrack could still
prove to be a cost-effective tool.
