Mike,
This may or may not relate to your problem, but there are two known
issues with the 722/744 that sound a little bit like what you are
describing.
The more likely one is directly related to Earthworks mics and
capacitance. It apparently affects the ability of the phantom power
supply to maintain constant voltage. There is some info on it at
http://sounddevicessupport.com/viewtopic.php?t=3D345
There is also a known issue with the A/D converter that causes problems
for some people. Although it is less likely to be your problem, you can
check it out at
http://sounddevicessupport.com/viewtopic.php?t=3D344
The good news is that Sound Devices offers a free fix for both of these
issues. The people there are very friendly and helpful. If either of
these issues sounds like you want to follow it up, given them a call or
file a support request at their web site.
Happy recording! I love my 744, even though it appears to be a work in
progress.
