Several things went into it... my sequence of workhorse recorders:

- Sony TCD-D8 DAT Walkman (plus DIY Panasonic mics) ... wore out/broke
- Alesis Masterlink + M-Audio Duo or FMR RNP with Earthworks SROs ...
Needs AC and is in a heavy roadcase. Still in use.
- Edirol R-1 ... OK with external pre, but pres need AC, but lots
of user interface problems (especially meters).
- Alternative is Duo into G4 iBook, but again, needs AC, and I
don't want to risk it in the field.

So I wanted something battery powered for the field, and as
good or better than Masterlink/RNP, but easier to haul.
Definitely want to power P48 mics like the SROs.
The Masterlink goes back & forth to weekly live music radio
show, and occasionally to live shows in other venues.
I have used the D8 (still!) and the R1 for nature and
ambient recordings, but I'd do more with an easier-to-use rig.

722 was claimed available about the same time bonus arrived,
so stop screwing around with less-than-adequate gear, so
I put in an order... still waiting.

There's a friend's band doing their last gig tonight
(starting 4 minutes ago!), and I would record it if
the 722 were here, but I'm not lugging the Masterlink etc.
over there, and R1 is too risky and fragile and needs
external pre anyway. So I'll take my Canon S1-IS and
shoot some video. The built-in mono mic and 16/22.05
recorder (plus 30fps video) sound surprisingly good,
the AGC actually works.
