The jury is still out on how many consumer grade
recorders can perform this well with the portable
phantom supply units. All of the PIP pre
recorders I've tried so far have had dramatic
improvement, but that's only a Sharp MT90, my
TRV-900 sony camcorder and the Sony NH-900 HiMD.
I've asked around on several lists for theories
about what the heck could be going on but no one
has come forth with much so far.The Art unit is
available for $44 on eBay, so I'm hoping people
will pick one up and see what it'll do for their
MD/DAT/Camcorders etc. and report back. I have no
background in circuitry whatsoever. There could
be a special sympathy between the tested
components, but if Klas's observation is
correct-- that today's mic pre chips are
basically high quality-- then we may see that
many recorders work. Of course, it takes a low
noise, phantom powered condenser mic to reap the
benefits. Rob D.
