Unfortunately, the adaptation of quicktime as the new standard to
replace mp3 did not result in universal standards. Except very briefly.
I was talking with a expert on these codecs, and apparently the
modifiers have been at it. There are now several variants of the
quicktime code, and several non-quicktime codes. All incompatible in
some way, and none any better, though their inventors all claim their's
is the best. The person I was talking to writes code that uses these
standards, and described it as a nightmare. Each piece of software they
write has to have up to date handlers for all that mess.
I sure wish when they would adopt "standards" they would hold for a good
deal longer than a nanosecond. Or until some programmer's ego makes him
try and change them, the way it works now. Like swimming in quicksand.
I'm in yet another hold on upgrading, waiting for the intel changeover
to settle. And find out if Apple just becomes another windows clone
maker. I know quite a few who are holding off.
