I was really hoping for a competitively-priced 2/4 channel Cantar-styled
recorder... sigh.

So you're a fan? :) I'd be curious to hear more about your experiences
with the Cantar! Especially if you've done any very quiet recording with
it -- field battery-life --- etc...
Fwiw I've heard people say that A/Bing the 744 preamps vs. a Lunatec v3
with live back-and-forth switching they could not hear a difference...
...so I think the SD ones are not the place money was saved... ;)
